Did You Know?

Why the Shelter Doesn't Work Downtown — and Won't Work on West Main Street

The Problem is the Program

  • Same program problems, different location, at what cost?
  • Operating model releases homeless population on the street at the same time students from four area schools travel West Main Street.
  • Program allows shelter access to anyone, but must leave drugs, alcohol, weapons, and paraphernalia outside, in the neighborhood.
  • Currently marketed as a Regional Shelter designed to meet the needs of the homeless population in all 15 Towns on the Cape and Islands. Same number of beds, operating at capacity. Where does the overflow go? In the neighborhood.

The Problem is the Location

  • Impacts the Safety and Security of neighborhood, area residents, schools, businesses.
  • Like Downtown, area businesses will need to hire security personnel to address problems.
  • More open space on W. Main St. for homeless to congregate and loiter including school properties.
  • Locating a homeless shelter across from family friendly mini golf and a brewery. REALLY?
  • Zoning regulations prohibit temporary homeless shelter in proposed location.

Hyannis Homeless Shelter

This current shelter offers no more than a bandaid. The operators want to move this shelter to 460 W. Main. The new location offers a fresh coat of paint — nothing else.

Who We Are

NANN is a neighborhood group of residents and businesses who believe relocating the temporary overnight homeless shelter to 460 West Main Street is NOT the solution. Let's work together to find a better solution for the program and location.

We want to help our neighbors in need. These neighbors in need are struggling with alcohol and drugs. The proposed shelter is not the way to do it. We want the right program in the right location.
